Honda CRV Bike Rack Stats Breakdown
Here’s a quick breakdown of all the stats for each bike rack for the Honda CRV.
Best Bike Rack For Honda CR-V 2020: Our Choices
The BV hitch mount is so far ahead of the rest of the bike racks it had to be number 1!
…First off it’s the most popular choice for SUV owners.
You can fold up it up right on your car!
This option is much more convenient and simple to do.
You just pull a pin and fold up the rack and a bar will lock into place.
At night it can be hard to see a bike rack sticking out of your CRV.
The BV has added safety reflectors so cars can see you the rack and it won’t cause an accident.
Your bikes are secured by a three-point connection system. Two tray arms for your tires and one vertical arm that holds your bike frame.
The vertical arms are padded to stop any paint from being damaged.
The pads have been known to get worn through to the medal.
If that does happen that can damage the paint of your bike. Make sure to check them after every use.
It is sturdy and made to last a long time.
This rack can hold up to 70 pounds. You won’t have any problem putting on any combination of bikes and overloading the tray with weight.
Unfortunately, this bike rack is pretty heavy. It weighs 43 pounds and will require 2 people to lift it up.
Taking it on and off the hitch can be a hassle so I would recommend leaving it on.
The Yakima FrontLoader is the best roof rack for the Honda CRV.
Have you ever seen a car drive by with a bike on the roof with the front wheel missing?
I have, and I know…
it’s a pain in the you know where to have to take that wheel off.
I love this bike rack because you don’t have to remove the front wheel off your bike.
Think of all the time and effort you save by keeping the wheel on. Plus you don’t need any extra tools which saves you money.
Another reason I really love this bike rack is that it only holds your bike by the front wheel.
There are a ton of bike racks that cause unnecessary damage to your bike frame.
Probably the single most important thing is just how easy The FrontLoader is installing to your Honda CRV.
The best part of all:
It requires no special tools!
This rack snaps easily to any crossbar that you have already installed. \
Because of the amazing clamping system you don’t have to worry about your bike taking a flight off your car.
The Yakima FrontLoader weighs as lights a feather. Seriously, it comes in at only 13 lbs. But it can hold a bike weight of up to 40 lbs.
One of the only downfalls is that you will have to look your bike up to the roof of your car.
So if your bike is heavy you may have trouble getting it up there.
Another downside is that you can only hold 1 bike per rack. So if you plan I’m taking multiple bikes this isn’t the right choice for you.
If you don’t want to break the bank…
Then the Tyger hitch rack is perfect for you!
Tyger is a great alternative to the Thule and Yakima hitch racks at an affordable price.
We’ve all been in a rush and just ready to go. We pack our bikes up but we forget about loading up the trunk.
We look up and shout some angry words to the sky.
This is the exact reason I love the Tyger Auto.
The Tyger Auto can move even with your bikes on it which will let you get into your trunk.
WHAT A LIFE SAVER!
Unfortunately, there is no quick release for access the trunk. You have to unbolt and angle it down.
The hitch lock, locks, and straps all come included with the rack. Most other companies don’t provide them and this will help you save some extra cash.
Most people complain about the WOBBLE of the rack during driving.
The 2-inch hitch will keep your rack secure to your Honda without the wobble.
The Allen Sports Premier Trunk Mounted Bike Rack is the best trunk bike rack for the Honda CR-V!
Let me explain why…
This bike rack is ready to be used Straight Out of the Box.
You can’t get any better than that a few snaps and you’re ready to put it on your Honda.
The install only takes 5 minutes and I still haven’t found a bike rack you get onto your car faster.
If you’re looking for simple, that’s what you’ll get because this bike rack only has 5 straps.
Each strap will attach to different points of your car and its on and ready for your bikes.
Worried about your car being damaged?
I’ve seen a ton of cars get scratched all up from trunk racks.
I once spent an hour buffing out a scratch on my car and I was pretty mad about it the whole time.
Allen Sports thought ahead and they use pads everywhere the rack touches your car.
So you won’t spend the hour like I did buffing out the scratch while crying and saying why me. (Yea that’s a true story and it still hurts to this day.)
I have a guide that you can read on how the further prevent scratches on your car by clicking here.
The full lifetime warranty is a great addition and will put your mind at ease if your bike rack does get damaged.
I may have skipped one or two gym days so putting a heavy rack on my car is just a little tough.
But, the premier trunk rack is super lightweight.
Weighing 11.2 lbs I can do curls with it in my sleep. You should have no problem lifting it up yourself.
It holds 2 bikes weighing a total of 70 lbs. There is also a 3 and 4 bike version if you need to take more bikes.
Unfortunately, the clips used to attach the bike rack to your car don’t have any protective coating. so they could potentially call scratches to your paint job.
This bike rack was a win for me. Because it’s superlight weight you can easily take it off your car when you aren’t using it.
This version of the Ikuram holds 2 bikes but has a model that can hold up to 4. The 2 bike version can hold up to a weight of 70 pounds.
Putting the rack into the hitch shouldn’t be too difficult. The Ikuram weighs 28.7 pounds.
It’s light enough pick up and put into the hitch without using too much effort.
Some assembly is required once you get this bike rack.
The rack comes with everything you will need to put it together so if you don’t have tools you won’t need to worry.
The dual arm design makes it easy to fit multiple different styles of bikes. Road, hybrid, mountain, and electric bikes will all fit.
The only bikes that won’t fit are the ones that have fat tires because they are too wide.
While driving in high winds and rain the rack won’t budge…
…not even an inch!
You don’t have to worry about your bikes falling off the back of your car and getting damaged.
When you aren’t using transporting bikes you can keep it on your Honda. The arms fold down which will make it compact and easy to store.
It also has a locking pin you can pull to fold the rack down to get into your trunk.
With the bike rack folded down, it will make it easier for you to load your bikes.
When it’s fully loaded with your bikes it will take 2 people to lower the rack down and put it back up.
The Honda CRV is a great family car!
What better way to spend time with your family than an outing on the trails.
The Allen Sports Deluxe has all the room you need!
This rack can hold up to 140 lbs of weight total for all 4 bikes. It will hold more than enough for a family outing.
It is on the heavier side which is both good and bad.
It makes putting it on the hitch a little more difficult but, you know you are getting a sturdy and long-lasting metal.
When not in use, the arms fold down for storage.
One Major Problem…
…that many racks have is fitting a women’s bike without an extra adapter.
This rack cradles have a 360-degree swivel so you can fit the frame in it without spending the extra money.
Pro Tip: You should invest in a bungee cord to tie around the wheels and handlebars. This will stop the wheels and handlebars from crashing into each other and scratching your car.
When all four bikes are on the rack the pivot feature is unusable. Which really does suck!
But, when you take the bikes off the rack its nice because you can get into your trunk without having to take the rack off your CRV.
The Ultimate Buyers Guide For The Best Bike Rack For Honda CRV
Choosing The Bike Rack Style For Your Honda CR-V
The style of rack is important to consider. You should ask yourself:
- Where do I feel comfortable putting my bike?
- What type of bike rack fits me best?
- Do I need to get into my trunk?
- How many bikes do I plan on bringing?
- What size are my bicycles?
- How easy is it to load my bikes onto the rack?
- How easy is the installation?
- How much weight can my Honda CR-V hold?
- How much do I want to spend?
Where Do I Feel Comfortable Putting My Bike?
Driving 70 MPH with your bikes strapped to your car can be nerve racking. There are only really two places you can put your bikes.
Either on the back of your car. You have to attach them to either our trunk or a hitch receiver. Or you can put them on the roof of your car.
A good thing about roof racks is that your bike won’t block your ability to see cars behind you.
But, you may be nervous at the fact that you can’t visually check your bikes while you drive.
With trunk and hitch mount bike racks you can see your bikes. But, they can block your license plate which in some states you can get pulled over for.
This really just comes down to personal preference.
What Type Of Bike Rack Fits Me Best?
I’m going to break down 3 different styles of bicycle racks that fit the Honda CR-V the best. Each style has its pros and cons.
You will learn the differences so you can make the best choice for you.
Hitch Rack for Honda CR-V
Driving on the road, the hitch rack is probably the common rack you will see on other vehicles. I highly suggest if you already have a hitch on your CR-V then you go with this option.
Hitch racks are heavy, sturdy, and very reliable. They will securely hold your bikes in place.
If you are concerned about your bike frame, this rack is the answer. The rack holds your bike into place by the wheel.
Transporting as many as 5 bikes is a breeze and if you don’t have a hitch you can get one installed!
Roof Bicycle Rack For Honda CR-V
The roof rack is a very budget-friendly option. There are different mounting points on your roof to set up the rack.
This rack is very versatile and can be used for more than just bikes. In the winter you put snowboards or ski’s on the roof.
In the summer bikes and kayaks can be transported.
There a few downsides you should consider….
Having to lift the bikes to the roof and bring them down can be a little extra work.
Your bikes will also add height to your vehicle so beware of that as well.
If you are a lover of the outdoors this rack is perfect for you.
Trunk Rack For Honda CR-V
Trunk racks are popular because of the convenience that they offer. It’s a very light rack and easy to take on and off your trunk.
Straps and hooks are used to install the rack to your trunk. The bikes are held in place by strapping the bike frame to the cradle.
The bike will sway a bit on the road which could cause a little frame damage.
If you are on the go and want an easy set up you should consider this rack.
Do I Need To Get Into My Trunk?
So you freed up room in your trunk by not trying to shove you bike into it. But you still want to use your trunk to store other things.
It’s very important you think about what bike rack would be best. A trunk bike rack attaches directly to our trunk.
You won’t have access to your trunk unless you take the whole rack off. What a pain!
I would consider a hitch rack. Almost all hitch racks have a swing away feature so you can keep the rack on your car and still access your trunk.
If your don’t have a hitch receiver than a roof rack is the next best option. As the name implies roof racks are on the roof and won’t block your trunk at all.
How Many Bikes Do I plan On Bringing?
Most bike racks carry multiple bikes. Just make sure whatever rack you decide has enough space for all your bikes.
Most roof bike racks only hold one bike so just keep that in mind. But, you can buy multiple roof racks if you need to transport more than one bike.
What Size Are My Bicycles?
You need to think about the size of your bike frame and tires as well as how much your bike weighs.
Each bike rack has a weight limit and if you’re bikes are too heavy it won’t be able to hold all your bikes.
The same goes for tires as well. If you have a fat tire bike you need to make sure the rack that you get can hold onto those tires.
The bike frame can be another issue you run into. Most bike racks need a special adapter for women and children bikes.
Also the type of bike comes into play. Hitch racks are the most versatile. They can carry pretty much every type of bike. Your next best bet is roof racks and after that is trunk racks.
How Easy Is It To Load My Bikes Onto The Rack?
This is a really important question to ask yourself before you invest in a bike rack.
Roof racks can be one of the most difficult to get your bikes mounted on. If you are short or not strong enough to get your bikes up on the roof than you should not consider this option.
Another downfall to roof racks is that some of them require you to take the front wheel off your bike. This is a major hassle and adds on more time to remove the wheel and then put it back on once you get where you are going.
The easiest way for you to go would be choosing between a hitch or trunk rack. Both these options don’t require you to lift the bike over your head.
The wheel stays on so no worries there. In my opinion, its just much less of a headache.
How Easy Is The Installation?
The great thing about bike racks is that most of them come assembled out of the box. The only thing you need to worry about is actually installing it on your CR-V.
Almost all the bike racks you will find are super easy to install.
Trunk bike racks are by far the easiest. They are simple and just clip onto certain parts of your trunk to stay in place. They are really light weight and can be handled by one person.
Hitch racks are also easy to install as long as you have a receiver hitch already on your Honda CR-V. Attach the rack to the hitch and screw it in securely.
One thing to consider is the weight of your hitch bike rack. Some can be very heavy and might require two people to install. But once its on your car you are good to go.
Last we have the roof rack. Roof racks are simple as well and most install to the crossbar that is already on your roof. Roof racks are light and will only require one person to install.
How much weight can my Honda CR-V hold?
Now that you’ve added a bike rack and some bikes you might be worried that your Honda CR-V can’t support all the added weight. Honda CR-V’s are rated to hold 1500 lbs worth of weight.
It will have no problem holding the highest capacity of bikes your rack can handle.
One thing you may notice is that with the extra weight your care won’t be getting as good gas mileage as it was before.
How Much Do I Want To Spend?
Bike racks can be very expensive. You want the peace of mind that what your getting is high quality.
A bike rack that damages your car and your bikes is not something that you want.
There are a ton of budget friendly racks that are also made of high quality material.
Hitch racks run the most expensive but you can find some really high quality ones for a good price.
Roof racks are in the same category as hitch racks. Last are trunk mounted bike racks.
They generally are cheaper and more beginner friendly. But again, you find some high quality bike racks out there for a good price.
Having a bike rack that fits your Honda CR-V and carries your bikes where you feel comfortable is very important. You need to make sure you decide on a bike rack that you can trust to get your bikes from point A to point B.
Out of the 6 bike racks that I reviewed I believe you can’t go wrong with BV Bicycle Hitch Mount Rack!
Although it’s a heavy rack, it’s made of sturdy material so it will last long. Because of the trays it will easily hold any type of bike you may own. When its not in use it folds up on your car. This way you don’t have to keep taking it on and off.
