The RockyMounts Monorail is the perfect bike rack for your minivan. You can take up to 2 bikes each weighing 60 lbs.

If you need to bring an additional bike it can expand to fit a third bike!

Your bikes are attached by the front wheel only. This is great because it will be impossible for your bike frame to get damaged.

I know camping trips are overwhelming enough without having to play Tetris with car seats and gear in the trunk. This bike rack will give you much-needed wiggle room inside the car.

While some racks might only carry traditional bikes, the RockyMounts Monorail can carry most women’s, children’s, and even fat tire bikes

When looking for a bike rack, you have to keep convenience in mind, and this one definitely fits the bill!

Once you unload your bikes you can get into your trunk without having to take your bike rack off your Minivan.

One downside is the fact that you’re limited to just 3 bikes max. With 3 bikes on the rack, the weight the rack can hold is less. While some hitch bike racks allow you to bring 5 bikes.

One customer said on their trip they drove 85 mph with no wobble from the rack.

Overall, this rack is reliable and perfect for any trip you’re about to take!

      Pros
      • Can hold up to two bikes at 60 pounds each.
      • The design lets you access your car trunk without uninstalling the whole thing.
      • Wheels are attached to the bike rack instead of the bike frame.
      Cons
      • Limited on the amounted of bikes you can bring.

If you click this link and make a purchase, we earn a commission at no additional cost to you.

While a lot of hitch racks are heavy and bulky, the Kuat Racks Sherpa 2.0 was designed for comfort in mind.

It’s made of aluminum and weighs only 45.6 pounds, but it can carry up to 2 bikes. Because it’s lighter than most bike racks, it saves you gas and muscle power.

It’s also available in two hitch sizes (1.25” and 2.0”) three metallic colors pearl and silver, black and gray, and gray and orange to help you find the best fit for your vehicle.

Adding on the user-friendly mission, the Kuat Racks Sherpa 2.0 offers a foot assist that lets you lower the rack without using your hands.

The new design provides more space between bikes and between bikes and the vehicle, so there is no damage to either.

A lot of complaints with bike racks is rubbing between bikes or bikes scraping on their cars, but the Kuat Racks Sherpa 2.0 would help with this problem.

One downside to this rack is that it’s a fixed two-bike carrier, so those looking for a bigger bike rack should just move on to the next review.

Another thing to consider is that customers claim that the assembly was a little tricky because some of the parts were defective or the instructions seemed confusing.

It might be a little challenging for those not used to assembling bike racks, but there is plenty of help online. There’s a video on the company’s website if you need a step-by-step.

      Pros
      • Made of light aluminum, easy carry.
      • Foot assist to lower the rack hands-free.
      • Available in two hitch receiver sizes and three colors.
      Cons
      • Locking mechanism may be faulty.
      • Tricky assembly due to often defective parts.

      3. SeaSucker Talon Single Bike Rack

The SeaSucker Talon Bike Rack, weighing only 6 pounds and is truly unique. It’s composed of three strong vacuum cups, attached to the roof of your car, and a wheel strap to secure 1 bike up to 45 pounds.

By strong suction cups, I mean 210 pounds of pull-strength per cup.

Think of pull-strength as the amount of force you need to take off the suction cup from a surface. With 210 pounds of pull-strength per cup, a lot of people are happy with this bike racks safety promise.

There is also an indicator on the cups that tell when you need to “reset” the cups to ensure full suction. Easily enough, this just requires a push pump button.

Another great thing about the SeaSucker Talon is that it’s compatible with any vehicle as opposed to hitch racks or trunk racks.

It is also extremely travel-friendly. It can fit into a bike bag or carry-on whenever you need it on-the-go. This is also useful for traveling through low clearance bridges or forests with low canopies.

A glaring disadvantage might be that there is no anti-theft locking mechanism for the rack itself (or your bike, consequently).

You would have to purchase your own lock or disassemble the rack when not in use.

Some people have also complained about the suction cups damaging the topcoat on their cars’ paint.

While this might not be as big of a problem with old cars as it is with new cars, it’s significant enough to consider before buying this rack.

      Pros
      • Compatible with any vehicle
      • Easy installation and use with a push button and release flap.
      • Strong vacuum cups (two hundred and ten pounds pull-strength per cup).
      Cons
      • No locking mechanism for anti-theft.
      • Rear suction cup easily damaged.

      4. Overdrive Sport 2 Hitch Bike Rack

If you click this link and make a purchase, we earn a commission at no additional cost to you.

The Overdrive Sport 2 is a heavy-duty hitch style bike rack weighing 49.9 pounds that can hold either 2 or 4 bikes (depending on your size choice) up to 60 pounds each.

This bike rack comes with three locks for added security, and it folds when not in use, saving space behind your car, and providing access to your trunk.

This bike rack is durable and secure, and also offers a limited lifetime warranty for certain situations.

Unfortunately, this bike rack is only compatible with 2” hitch receivers and the company does not recommend using adapters for safety reasons.

Compared to some other bike racks, this high-quality bike rack is valuable for heavy-duty bikes. Some users even claimed they stored bikes that weighed up to 70 pounds with no problem when the maximum weight is capped at 60 pounds.

Although the reviews are generally positive, this bike rack seems to have a tricky and ineffective lock mechanism when users store multiple bikes.

This is an issue if you plan to leave your bikes unattended for long periods of time or if you don’t own any cable locks yourself.

Another issue is that the plastic parts are prone to breaking, but this is where the limited lifetime warranty might come in handy for users.

        Pros
        • Heavy duty bike rack up to sixty pounds (some reported seventy pounds) each bike.
        • Rack folds when not in use.
        • Three locks for security.
        Cons
        • Tricky/ineffective lock mechanism when storing multiple bikes.
        • Plastic parts prone to breaking.

If you click this link and make a purchase, we earn a commission at no additional cost to you.

The Thule Apex XT is an easy-install hitch style bike rack weighing 33.9 pounds and can hold up to 5 bikes at a maximum of 35 pounds each.

The new design emphasizes anti-wobble and anti-rattle features, meaning your bikes won’t sway or bounce up and down when you’re on the road. This limits damage to the bikes and possible damage to your vehicle.

The platform itself is also arched, which seems like it makes it easier for users to mount their vehicles onto the rack.

Also, the new design has more space between the bikes and between the bikes and the vehicle, limiting contact between either.

The rack’s “Hold Fast Cradles” feature holds your bikes in place and offers a cushion when the vehicle is in motion.

When you’re not using the rack, (and only when it’s not in use), you can fold the rack down to access your trunk with ease.

The rack also provides an integrated cable lock system that secures your bikes to the rack. The lock can be stored in the rack itself when not in use.

The 5 bike max is very appealing, but you might need an adapter for bikes like women or children’s bikes because of the frame.

Users also report having to remove a specific bolt to uninstall the rack every time, but I haven’t run into this issue.

        Pros
        • Cushion prevents contact between bikes and between bikes and vehicles.
        • Wobbling and rattling prevention.
        • Lifetime warranty offered.
        Cons
        • Adapter needed for nontraditional bikes (women’s or children’s bikes).
        • Must remove specific product bolt to uninstall rack every time.

If you click this link and make a purchase, we earn a commission at no additional cost to you.

The Allen Sports Premier trunk mount bike rack is a light weight, dual arm carrier that can hold two bikes. I love the versatility of this bike rack because it fits on minivans, sedans, hatchbacks, and SUV’s.

You don’t have to waste your time putting the Allen Sports Premier bike rack together. Its ready to go as soon you get it.

It’s super easy to install onto your minivan and only should take a few minutes once you get it down.

The patented tie down system holds each one of your bikes securely and protects it them getting damaged or scratched.

The Allen Sports Premier also protects your minivans paint because rubber feet (which is a huge problem for most trunk mount bike racks). Also your minivan won’t get dented because this trunk mounted bike rack distributes weight evenly.

One user said he took the Allen Sports trunk mount bike rack on an almost 1000 mile road trip and he had no issues at all.

Just keep in mind that the straps get loose over time and we need to be retightened. If you don’t then your whole bike rack will be hanging off your minivan and it could cause damage to your bikes or car.

        Pros
        • Great for long trips
        • Easy set up
        • Protects paint job
        Cons
        • Need to retighten straps

How to Choose for the Best Minivan Bike Rack:

What You Should Do When Your Looking For A Bike Rack For Your Minivan

First, double-check if you have a trailer hitch on your vehicle. This will help narrow down your choices.

If you do, you can look into all three different bike rack types. If you don’t, you can install one. There are resources online on how to safely install a trailer hitch.

Second, consider your lifestyle and circumstances. This is where you can specify designs and features.

If you have a big family and saving space is your biggest concern, a roof or hitch rack might be most sensible.

Are you going on a long road trip to the mountains? What are road conditions like?

If you install a roof rack and store your bikes vertically on a minivan, this might make your vehicle height too tall. This means driving under bridges with low clearance could be dangerous.

Driving on narrow mountain roads on a minivan also means you have to consider if you want a bike rack that has a “swinging” rack (a flexible rack that slides your bikes to the left or right like a lever) to make sure you don’t hit trees/mountainsides/other vehicles.

Third, ask yourself if you want a no-frills bike rack or one that’s multipurpose. Cost aside, it’s worth checking out racks that double as standing bike racks.

This might be useful for people who want to access their trunks when not using the bike rack.

A key thing to remember is to make sure the bike rack is compatible with your vehicle. I’ve reviewed five different bike racks and here is my input.

What are the different types of bike racks For Minivans?

Excluding truck and cargo box racks, there are three main types of bike racks:

        Roof Racks

These racks are installed on the roof of your car. They help save space, but lifting the bike up to the roof could be hard for you. If you have a heavier bike I wouldn’t get a roof rack.

Roof racks are great if you are only riding one bike. If you have multiple bikes you need to either buy more roof racks or go for a different style rack.

        Hitch Mounted Bike Rack

These are attached to the “hitch” or the bar on the bottom of your car. This is the same way a trailer would be attached to the bottom of your car.

The bikes are then easily stored on bars/platforms.  I like hitch mounted bike racks because you can still get into your trunk. And most of them swing up when are you aren’t using them. So you can keep them on your car when you aren’t using them.

Hitch mounted bike racks are heavier and you need a hitch to install them. If you don’t have a hitch they can be a little expensive to get installed.

        Trunk Rack

Using straps and other support bars, you store bikes outside the car supported on your trunk. Trunk mounted bike racks limit access to your trunk.

So before you buy this type of bike rack think about how often you’ll need to open your trunk.

Trunk racks are the easiest to install or take off your car. They are also lightweight and great if you have multiple bikes to take with you.

How Many Bikes Do You have?

Knowing the number of bikes you have or will have on your next trip will really help you figure out which bike rack is best for you.

If you’re bringing a lot of bikes your gonna need either a hitch or trunk rack. A roof rack will be great if you’re only taking one bike.

Are bike racks for minivans safe?

A bike rack for a minivan is safe. Yes, bikes have fallen off roof and trunk racks, but if they are installed correctly, bike racks pose no danger to the driver or anybody else on the road.

If you’re unsure of how to install a bike rack, please consult a professional.

There are other precautions you can take, like buying a protection film where the rack or bike touches your car, mounting your bikes properly, and making sure all the rack parts are undamaged before installing.

        FAQ

Can a bicycle fit in a minivan?

Yes, you can fit a bike in a minivan. If you put the seats down you can fit a few bikes in your Minivan.

If you have the tools you can take the wheels off your bike and you should be able to fit more bikes without having to lay all the seats down. It’s just a lot more work!

How many bikes can you fit in a minivan?

Two bikes can fit comfortably in most minivans. You’ll still have some room to put some things in the trunk.
